We recently participated in a online meeting of the working group of the European POWER project in Greeceorganized by the ActionAid association (coordinator of the initiative in the Greek country). An international meeting space in which we have had the opportunity to present our BREAKWAVE Project: Rural women, gender violence and mental health and put on the table first results and conclusions of its development.
This initiative is implemented within the framework of the European project “POWER – promoting the empowerment of organizations to guarantee the Human Rights of women and stop gender violence«that seeks to strengthen Civil Society Organizations (CSO) in Italy, Greece and Spain to protect and guarantee women’s fundamental rights and address gender violence. POWER is co-financed by the European Union through the Citizenship, Equality, Rights and Values Program (CERV-2023-DAPHNE) and coordinated by We, the worldin collaboration with Hellas Action Help and Welfare and Development Association (ABD).
This sharing reaffirms the importance of networking and European alliances to continue promoting the rights and well-being of women.
What have we achieved so far?
Despite the structural challenges in rural areas, such as geographic isolation or fear of stigma regarding mental health and gender violence.we have managed to weave alliances and build spaces of total security and trust.
he balance of these first months It leaves us with very positive conclusions. On the one hand, we have significantly increased assistance and recruitment of rural women in vulnerable situations. 9 workshops have been implemented in the towns of Huerta de Rey and Villarcayo (Burgos), Las Navas del Marqués (Ávila), Hospital de Órbigo (León), Guardo (Palencia), Ciudad Rodrigo (Salamanca), Nava de la Asunción (Segovia), Tudela de Duero (Valladolid) and Grisuela (Zamora), for more than 80 participating women.
Added to this is a job in which we put the focus on personal and social growth, providing participants with key tools to take charge of your own life, mimprove your self-esteem and promote your autonomy in decision making.
Likewise, we work transversally in the identification and prevention of different types of gender violenceespecially in those that directly affect specific to women with mental health problems or psychosocial disabilities.
All this with the objective of breaking isolation as a tool to promote change. To do this, we develop group dynamics ensuring that Networks of mutual support and comprehensive intervention among equals are generated.
To give a real and focused response on each personWe wanted to convey to the European partners how we have We adapt our methodology to the particular characteristics of the rural environment, moving from theoretical constructs to participatory and experiential dynamics. that encourage greater involvement; as well as making times more flexible to adapt to the needs of the group.
In this sense, we want to thank the enormous Networking with entities, professionals, local agents and our associative movement that facilitate daily support in each territory of Castilla y León.
