Participamos en la Jornada Nacional de Apoyo de Pares en Salud Mental organizada por ASAENES en Sevilla

The Castilla y León Mental Health Federation has participated in the First National Conference on Peer Support in Mental Health, entitled “First Person Plural”held in Seville and organized by ASAENES Mental Health Sevillewith the support of ONCE FOUNDATIONthe junta of andalusia and the seville town hall.

The meeting brought together professionalspeople with their own experience in mental health and mutual support agents from different territories to reflect on the present and future of this key figure in the transformation of community care in mental health.

On behalf of our associative movement, Enrique Santos, mutual support agent in Castilla y Leónparticipated in the table dedicated to regional experiences of mutual support and personal assistance, sharing the work that is being developed in our community and, especially, the experience of community care pilot project carried out in Zamorawith the support of the Zamora Health Care Management and SACILOthrough the Fund of the Mental Health Action Plan of the Ministry of Health.

The value of mutual support; accompany from experience

The figure of mutual support agent arises from the recognition that one’s own experience in mental health constitutes valuable knowledge for accompany other people in their recovery processes. From a relationship based on equality, listening and hope, mutual support agents offer emotional support, promote community participation and contribute to combating the stigma associated with mental health problems.

During his speech, Enrique Santos presented the experience that the Castilla y León Mental Health Federation is developing in Zamora through a community care pilot project based on the mutual support modelin collaboration with the Zamora Mental Health Service.

This initiative incorporates the figure of the mutual support agent in coordination with community mental health resourceswith the aim of offering close support to people, strengthening their recovery processes and promoting their active participation in the community.

Experience is allowing us to verify how Peer support generates spaces of trust, improves emotional well-being and helps people regain prominence about their own life projects. Furthermore, it represents an important step towards more humane, community-based care models focused on people’s rights with mental health problems.

The day organized by ASAENES has served to cshare experiences from different autonomous communities and to vindicate the role that mutual support teams play in the transformation of mental health services.

The participation of the Castilla y León Mental Health Federation in this meeting reaffirms its commitment to the development of innovative initiatives that place people at the center and with the consolidation of the figure of the mutual support agent as a fundamental resource to move towards community-based, inclusive and recovery-based care.
