El protagonista ve cómo su vida se corroe, poco a poco, cuando una plaga de gusanos invade su despensa, simbolizando el colapso emocional que se cuela hasta en sus sueños. Así, los autores construyen una trama en la que la soledad, la salud mental y la desconexión social se vuelven plagas invisibles que devoran desde dentro. Trascender el miedo puede ser liberador, si la red acompaña y la herida se trabaja.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]“Una plaga en casa acabó convirtiéndose en una incomodidad, que se hizo obsesión… la obsesión que, luego, se traslada al personaje”, plantea Javier Gallego, periodista, escritor y músico, cuya pluma dio lugar al guion de ‘La plaga’. Y añade: “Sabes que en una parte de tu casa tienes una plaga de gusanos, están contigo”, y describe cómo eso activa “una serie de miedos y ascos”. El periodista refleja que aquella experiencia personal quedó en él “como un pequeño trauma”.

Javier Gallego explica la trama de esta novela gráfica “como un proceso mental obsesivo”, en el que la composición artística dialoga entre palabras, imágenes y silencios. De esta manera, Juan Gallego, pintor y dibujante, cuyo trazo da luz y sombra en la viñeta a lo que Pedro es, a lo que el personaje encarna, comparte que todo lo ve “a través del color”, incluso “aquellas instancias de la historia en las que no lo hay”, siendo aquello una elección “absolutamente consciente”.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image="144437" img_size="full" add_caption="yes" onclick="link_image" css=""][vc_column_text css=""]A su vez, el artista da cuenta de que la portada “es una especie de limbo, un sitio indefinido… que es donde está Pedro en la historia”. Afirma que se alude “a lo no dicho, a lo no evidente”; mientras que, no bien abres el libro, “allí están los gusanos”. Lo asemeja al agobio que siente una persona que vive rodeada de asuntos pendientes: “Abres una puerta, y allí está lo que te acosa”.

Quien puso cara a Pedro, quien le dio sus facciones e inherente tribulación, revela que el personaje, “para evitar sufrir, se impide a sí mismo vivir”.

“Es hipersensible”, agrega Javier Gallego, quien creó el guion pensando en alguien “vulnerable a los sentimientos… de esas personas que han tenido que construir un caparazón porque la vida, cada vez que les roza, les hiere”. Para el periodista, “Pedro teme a esa herida… y la vida se le ha hecho costra”.

Los autores coinciden en que la novela “se mueve entre lo oscuro y lo luminoso”.

En este sentido, el guionista advierte que “hay un mundo en el que Pedro sabe que sería placentero vivir: donde se anima a los sueños, la familia y el amor, pero no se ha ido atreviendo, por lo que se ha convertido en el reverso tenebroso de sí mismo”. Plantea que “es la enfermedad la que se va apoderando de él”. Mientras tanto, el dibujante, y su par en la viñeta, hace hincapié en que “ante el problema, lo que muchas veces no se advierte es la importancia de la red”.

“Pedro queda atrapado en cada uno de sus duelos, no aprende de ellos para salir con más luz -aunque lo intenta-. Permanece en esa tristeza, en las caídas; no progresa”, suma el periodista y escritor. E interpreta al personaje como “alguien que va hacia atrás”, sin perder de vista que, a lo largo de la trama, “mientras la propia novela avanza, conforme lo hace, retrocede… y es que, sobre el final, queda claro que lo que Pedro hace es, de alguna manera, un viaje al pasado”.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]

“Sin dar mayores pistas, queda claro que la repugnancia que Pedro siente es hacia sí mismo. Por su propia incapacidad para vivir, su mundo es una plaga… y una plaga es la podredumbre; su mundo se descompone todo el rato… el gusano es él”, define el autor de la trama. Y sugiere que “probablemente, la plaga ni exista” y que “este asco visceral se dé en él por no haber sido lo que quería ser, lo que le ha hecho no sentirse capaz… una polilla polvorienta, que no es nadie”.

Para Javier Gallego, “los distintos ‘fracasos’ que experimenta Pedro son duelos no transitados”, que le han llevado “a convertirse en gusano”. Surge, luego, el análisis sobre lo que podría aportar -a Pedro y a todas las personas- un acompañamiento terapéutico. A los ojos del escritor, “los procesos depresivos pueden tener momentos de lucidez. Creo que esto le pasa a Pedro; tiene momentos de luz, pero rápidamente se apodera de él lo autodestructivo. Es allí cuando se evidencia la fuerza de una terapia para cualquier herida emocional”.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=""]

“‘La plaga’ expresa que este mundo termina siendo “inhóspito”, porque “nos fuerza a cumplir expectativas inhumanas”

El guionista subraya que ‘La plaga’ deja ver que “hay problemas que solucionamos con más problemas”, como ocurre con “la excesiva medicalización”: “Pedro, rápidamente, acude a las pastillas… en vez de hacer terapia, o de vincularse”. Para el autor, “se exponen, también, las soledades no deseadas, lo que nos rodea y no somos capaces de ver, porque vivimos ‘a la nuestra’, en una atomización; sin sentido de comunidad ni sentido de cuidado a través de la comunidad”. Además, “expone que vivimos en un mundo de enorme exigencia, que nos hace sentir la incapacidad de cumplir con ese dar lo mejor de ti y estar siempre bien”, algo que, asegura, “es imposible”.

Para el periodista y escritor, ‘La plaga’ expresa que este mundo termina siendo “inhóspito”, porque “nos fuerza a cumplir expectativas inhumanas”. Considera que “no estamos construyendo una vida a la medida de las personas: natural, sencilla y directa, sino que estamos atiborrados de impactos que nos exigen ser felices”. Y determina que, “cuando te exigen ser feliz, la exigencia es una cárcel”.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]Un diálogo sereno y reflexivo con ambos autores culmina no sin antes conocer qué desean que genere su obra en las personas.

“Que sirva para mover cosas; que sea una oportunidad para mirarnos y no vivir anestesiados”, expresa Juan Gallego.

Por su parte, Javier Gallego manifiesta: “Yo siempre he tenido miedo a quedarme atrapado en el miedo”, y apunta su anhelo de que la trama sea, sobre todo, “y aunque parezca lo contrario, un estímulo para vivir... que, desde lo duro, se produzca un impulso, una agitación. Quiero provocar un momento de catarsis. «The worm that lives: the fears that devour in ‘The Plague’»

Speaking with… Javier and Juan Gallego, co-authors of the graphic novel «The Plague». Interview published in No. 2 of Encuentro Magazine of 2025.

Javier and Juan Gallego, brothers and co-authors of the graphic novel ‘The Plague’, explore, through the character of Pedro, the burden of a tearing past.

The protagonist sees his life corrode, little by little, when a plague of worms invades his pantry, symbolizing the emotional collapse that creeps into his dreams. Thus, the authors build a plot in which loneliness, mental health and social disconnection become invisible plagues that devour from within. Transcending fear can be liberating, if the network is there and the wound is worked on.

“A plague in the house ended up becoming a discomfort that became an obsession… the obsession that is then transferred to the character«, says Javier Gallego, journalist, writer and musician, whose pen gave rise to the script for ‘The Plague’. And he adds: «You know that in one part of your house you have a plague of worms, they are with you,» and describes how that activates «a series of fears and disgustThe journalist reflects that that personal experience remained with him “like a small trauma.”

Javier Gallego explains the plot of this graphic novel “as an obsessive mental process”, in which the artistic composition dialogues between words, images and silences. In this way, Juan Gallego, painter and illustrator, whose line gives light and shadow in the vignette to what Pedro is, to what the character embodies, shares that he sees everything “through color”, even “those instances of history in which there is none”, that being an “absolutely conscious” choice.

In turn, the artist realizes that the cover «is a kind of limbo, an undefined place… which is where Pedro is in the story.» He states that it refers to “what is not said, what is not evident”; While, as soon as you open the book, “there are the worms.” He compares it to the overwhelm felt by a person who lives surrounded by unfinished business: “You open a door, and there is what harasses you”.

The one who gave Pedro a face, who gave him his features and inherent tribulation, reveals that the character, “to avoid suffering, prevents himself from living.”

“He is hypersensitive,” adds Javier Gallego, who created the script thinking of someone “vulnerable to the feelings… of those people who have had to build a shell because life, every time it touches them, it hurts themFor the journalist, “Pedro fears that wound… and his life has become scabbed.”

The authors agree that the novel “moves between the dark and the light”.

In this sense, the screenwriter warns that «there is a world in which Pedro knows it would be pleasant to live: where dreams, family and love are encouraged, but he has not dared, so he has become the dark reverse of himself.» He states that “it is the disease that is taking over him.” Meanwhile, the cartoonist, and his counterpart in the cartoon, emphasizes that “in the face of the problem, what is often not noticed is the importance of red”.

“Peter remains trapped in each of his duelsHe doesn’t learn from them to come out with more light – although he tries. Remain in that sadness, in the falls; does not progress,» adds the journalist and writer. And he interprets the character as «someone who goes backwards», without losing sight of the fact that, throughout the plot, «as the novel itself advances, as it does, back…and at the end, it becomes clear that what Pedro does is, in some way, a trip to the past.”

A visceral disgust

«Without giving further clues, it is clear that the disgust that Pedro feels is towards himself. Because of his own inability to live, your world it’s a plague…and a plague is rot; His world breaks down all the time… he is the worm,» defines the author of the plot, and suggests that «probably, the plague does not even exist» and that «this visceral disgust occurs in him for not having been what he wanted to be, which has made him not feel capable… a dusty moth, who is nobody.»

For Javier Gallego, “the different ‘failures’ that Pedro experiences are unexplored duels,” which have led him “to become a worm.” Then comes the analysis of what therapeutic accompaniment could provide – to Pedro and to all people. In the writer’s eyes, «depressive processes can have moments of lucidity. I think this happens to Pedro; he has moments of light, but self-destructiveness quickly takes over. That’s when it becomes evident.» the power of therapy for any emotional wound”.

“’The Plague’ expresses that this world ends up being “inhospitable,” because “it forces us to meet inhuman expectations.”

The inhospitable

The screenwriter emphasizes that ‘The Plague’ shows that “there is problems that we solve with more problems«, as occurs with «excessive medicalization»: «Pedro quickly resorts to pills… instead of doing therapy, or bonding.» For the author, «the unwanted lonelinesswhat surrounds us and we are not able to see, because we live ‘at our own pace’, in an atomization; no sense of community or sense of care through the community.» In addition, «it shows that we live in a world of enormous demandsthat makes us feel the inability to fulfill that give your best and always be well«, something that, he assures, «is impossible.»

For the journalist and writer, ‘The Plague’ expresses that this world ends up being «inhospitable»because “it forces us to meet inhuman expectations.” Consider that “we are not building a life tailored to people: natural, simple and direct, but rather we are full of impacts. that require us to be happy«. And it determines that, «when they demand you be happy, the demand is a prison”.

A serene and reflective dialogue with both authors culminates but not before knowing what they want their work to generate in people.
