  • Myths and false beliefs must be dismantled and interventions must be made based on scientific evidence.
  • We need to plan care services in the educational, work and health fields.
  • Support systems, accompaniment and follow-up after suicidal crises must be created. The person with suicidal thoughts must interact with society, feel understood and develop a survival instinct that puts him on the path to recovery.
  • We must raise awareness in the media so that they become involved in the prevention of suicidal behaviour, offering quality information and a catalogue of recommendations. The first step is to gain time.

Once We break the silenceand a collective consciousness emerges, we will have created an environment conducive to the person asking for help, being honest, expressing their feelings, and connecting with life. We must not be blinded by perfection. It is enough to treasure moments of emotion, contentment, and happiness.

World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 Manifesto

Manifesto prepared by the Pro Mental Health Committee in First Person and the State Network of Women of the Confederation of Mental Health in Spain.

One more year we attended the World Suicide Prevention Dayto send a message of hopeand to call for action in the face of that unwanted consequence that causes psychological suffering.

Considering the figure of 4,227 suicides recorded in the last academic year, and that for every completed suicide there are another twenty attempts, let us realise the magnitude of the tragedy, and the need to open a channel of trust so that the person who suffers can make an effort to overcome it.

Each year we focus on a vulnerable group, and in this edition we observe a reality that is hidden in the world of sport.

We all enjoy high-level sporting competitions. However, we are unable to see the demands and deprivations of athletes who aspire to perfection.

We see the beauty of the exercises, but we forget the daily struggle in training, and the loneliness of a life between airports and cold hotel rooms.

While in the prime of their careers, their mind and body remain focused on high performance, and they are strong enough to handle frustrating situations.

Even so, the pressure of success is a constant threat, and the mind can end up giving in and asking for a time of reflection. In this sense, many elite athletes are accompanied by a psychology team to measure the impact on mental health.

We also know that physical conditions end up deteriorating after a few years, and these athletes have to face the day after. A plan B is needed: «what now?»

This is a delicate moment and support systems are needed to redirect their lives beyond the competition, thereby reducing the risk of suicidal behavior as uncertainty increases.

We have seen the vulnerability in sport, but the truth is that the problem of suicide remains a silenced social phenomenon, and this prevents us from formulating a solution.

Stigma, guilt and prejudice hinder prevention, early detection and subsequent treatment.

It is time to grab onto that lifeline that is hope. To do so, we must act in a positive and conscious way:

There is no need to be blinded by perfection. It is enough to treasure moments of emotion, joy and happiness.
