Summer is the ideal time to swim and cool off from the heat in swimming pools, in the numerous rivers and swamps in our community or on the beach. However, lack of caution when bathing causes numerous accidents to occur in the aquatic environment, such as drowning or trauma, which could be avoided if safe behavior is adopted.
According to estimates of the World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that 236,000 people die from drowning each year in the world. In fact, drownings are among the ten main causes of mortality in children and young people aged 1 to 24 years. However, 90% of deaths from unintentional drowning are concentrated in low- and middle-income countries.
When bathing, the main recommendation is prudence and common sense. Furthermore, a series of Measures to make the bathroom as safe as possible.:
- Choose areas enabled for bathing and that are monitored by lifeguards.
- Always follow the instructions of the lifeguards. If you are at the beach, do not swim with a red flag.
- Avoid drinking alcohol before bathing.
- Do not jump into the water if you do not know its depth, as a shallow area could cause a serious head or back injury.
- Introduce it into the water gradually, avoiding sudden changes in temperature.
- If you begin to feel tired, cold or uncomfortable in the water, get out immediately and ask for help if you deem it necessary.
- You have to be careful with games in the water or around the edges of the pool. Also with the misuse of flotation elements.
Pay special attention to girls and boys:
- Keep an eye on the minors in your care and do not lose sight of them at any time, they are your responsibility.
- Boys and girls must wear a life jacket or an approved float. It is important that they learn to swim as soon as possible, to reduce the risk of accidents.
- Swimming pools must have a perimeter fence that prevents unattended access by minors.
