The Madrid City Council, through Madrid Salud, has expanded the number of participants in its program to up to 5,000 children. An international project with scientific endorsement.
‘Coles con ALAS-COPI’ is part of the international initiative Cities for Better Health – Childhood Obesity Prevention Initiative (CBH_COPI), led by Nordiskin which cities from Brazil, Canada, France, Japan and South Africa participate. The Madrid project has the academic support of the EPINUT Group of the Complutense University of Madridresponsible for the scientific monitoring and systematic evaluation of activities, anthropometric measurements and statistical analysis of data. our Healthy Eating Foundation participates in the development of the project together with EPINUT. The study has received a favorable report from the Ethics Committee of the Carlos III Health Institute.
During the first two years, educational interventions, family workshops, active games and community campaigns will be developed, followed by a year of evaluation to measure the real impact on the reduction of childhood obesity and the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits.
A worrying reality.
In Madrid, 40.9% of children between 3 and 12 years old are overweight or obese. In districts with less socioeconomic development such as Carabanchel, Usera, Puente de Vallecas and Villaverde the figure rises to 46.7%. Faced with this situation, the City Council created ‘Coles con ALAS’, a project that Madrid Salud launched in 2021 to prevent student obesity and associated diseases through an active and participatory methodology that involves the entire educational community. Now it goes one step further and reinforces its prevention strategy through the ‘Coles con ALAS-COPI’ program, which promotes healthy lifestyles in schoolchildren.
