Semana Mundial de Concienciación sobre la Resistencia Antimicrobiana

date
11/18/2025 – 11/28/2025

Of the November 18 to 24 2025, ISGlobal joins the World Humanitarian Awareness Week Antimicrobial Resistance (WAAWfor its acronym in English) with a set of creative and participatory activities that invite citizens to reflect on the good use of the antibiotics and the global health.

The campaign combines visual, artistic and informative formats to reach all audiences: videos, murals, round tables, distribution of educational materials and an immersive installation in public spaces, such as squares and streets. The objective is to make visible this “invisible pandemic” and promote daily actions to prevent infections and reduce the spread of resistant bacteria. Once these activities are completed, an ISGlobal team will prepare a final report on what regulations are necessary to expedite actions towards more responsible consumption of antibiotics.

Immersive art installation

Located at the Guinardó Civic Center, this visual, interactive and sensory experience invites you to reflect on the impact of antibiotics on the environment and health. Three artists have participated, including Sebastián Jara, and it has been possible thanks to the collaboration with Barcelona City Council and the ReAcció project.

The installations illustrate concepts such as the growth of resistant bacteria, the environmental impact of antibiotic consumption, and the relationship between human, animal, and environmental health—a concept known as «One Health.» In addition, an impact analysis will be carried out among the attendees, such as the knowledge acquired or perceptions.

📍Place: Guinardó Civic Center (Barcelona)

📅 Dates: November 18-24, 2025

Cycle of round tables

Professionals from diverse fields such as microbiology, public health, pharmaceutical regulation or planetary health, together with representatives of civil society and regulatory agencies, will discuss the impacts of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), its relationship with individual and collective behaviors, and what actions can contribute to reducing its spread.

These open dialogues between professionals and citizens will take place in libraries in Barcelona and L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.

Antibiotic resistance: what they are, why they arise and how to stop them in urban areas

With the RAMBLA project, we investigate the resistant bacteria that inhabit urban public spaces, such as parks, and propose places to reduce their impact with measures, thanks to citizen involvement in participatory workshops. This talk will also offer practical advice to make good use of antibiotics and avoid infections, as well as small individual actions that will contribute to improving community and child health.

📍Place: Montbau–Albert Pérez Baró Library (Barcelona)

📅 Date: November 20, 2025, from 7 to 8 p.m.

👤 Speakers: Elisabet Guiral (RAMBLA Project, ISGlobal), Karol Delgado (ISGlobal), Carlos Ferrer (Consorci d’Atenció Primària de Salut Barcelona Esquerra), Jordi Vila (CIBER, Hospital Clínic, ISGlobal).

What would you do? Daily decisions regarding antimicrobial resistance

Antimicrobial resistance: health, environment, conflicts and extreme climate

Extreme weather events and natural disasters are becoming more frequent and have a strong impact on health, water management, agriculture and global food systems. Added to these challenges are international conflicts, which aggravate the displacement of populations, make access to health care difficult and amplify health risks.

In this talk we will address these challenges from the perspective of One Health, which connects human, animal and environmental health. Experiences and learnings from AMR research and how global changes influence the spread of diseases and sustainable resource management will be presented. Ideas will also be provided to reduce risks and promote community responses to a shared problem.

📍Place: Gabriel García Márquez Library (Barcelona)

📅 Date: November 24, 2025, from 7 to 8 p.m.

👤 Speakers: Sara Soto (ISGlobal), Elizabeth Diago (ISGlobal) and expert in environment and agricultural management (to be confirmed).

Debate and co-creation workshop

Health professionals and patient representatives will work together to identify barriers and regulatory proposals for responsible use of antibiotics. Pending confirmation.

📍 Location: Brussels (session within the framework of the European Patients Forum – Health Security and Pandemic Preparedness)

Stop Motion Video

A visual and direct action that reminds us that “in a world where we travel constantly, so do bacteria.” The video, available in five languages (Catalan, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and English), will be projected on the screens of FGC stations to promote daily health habits that reduce the risk of infections, contagions and antimicrobial resistance.

Artistic murals

Designed and adapted thanks to the collaboration with Shionogi SL, various murals and posters will fill the subways of Barcelona, Madrid, Murcia, Málaga, Oviedo and Bilbao with color and knowledge. The goal is to capture the attention of passengers and inspire small changes with a big impact on RAM.

📅 Dates: November 18 – December 15 (Barcelona) / November 17 – December 23 (Spain)

From the pharmacy and the institute to social networks

During ADR Awareness Week (November 18–24), brochures and posters on the responsible use of antibiotics will be distributed in pharmacies in Barcelona and Girona, including accessible materials in Braille and several languages. Educational posters will also be distributed in institutes, universities and hospitals in Barcelona.

And to reach the younger audience, we launched into TikTok and Instagram with a short video series to explain the consequences of antimicrobial resistance and how to prevent it, with the aim of promoting healthy habits and inviting reflection.
