Safeguarding Planetary Health in the Bolivian Amazon: A Call to Action Against Deforestation

He Amazon Bolivian It is being deforested at an unprecedented rate, faster than in other South American countries. Agricultural expansion and mining degrade the region and strip it of forests. But The impact is not only environmental, but also affects the health of thousands of people.Especially in indigenous and rural communities, which are now exposed to diseases of which they were previously protected and suffering the effects of the increase in air and water pollution.

The document, written by Marta Mascares, Shannon O’Brien, Marina Pérez, Madiha Shekhani and Paula Alonso, analyzes the situation and offers. Recommendations So that governments and international actors take measures before it is too late. It is based on findings of the initiative «Planetary health: challenges and opportunities in the Bolivian Amazon of the North». This is a Collaboration between Medici Mundi Mediterrània (MMMmed), the Global Health Institute of Barcelona (ISGlobal)and the following Bolivian institutions: the José Ballivián de Beni Autonomous University (UAB-JB), the CIPCA Research and Promotion Center (CIPCA), the Amazon Forest Research Institute (IIFA) and the Riberalta 07 Health Services Network of the Ministry of Public Health. It is funded by the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation (ACCD) and the Government of Catalonia.
