Chile becomes latest country to join the Alliance for Primary Health Care in the Americas – PAHO/WHO

Geneva, Switzerland, May 22, 2025 (PAHO/WHO) -The Ministry of Health of Chile joined the Alliance for Primary Health Care in Las Américas, a joint initiative led by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) through the establishment of the advisory table of the ATROR OF THE HEALTH OF THE HEALTH Health Primary in Chile.

Speaking at a ceremony to commemorate the occasion, held outside the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, director of the PAHO, Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, congratulated the Ministry of Health of Chile for Chile for its «sustained commitment to universal countries, equitable and person centered,» and highlighted the importance of the initiative in the response to the challenges of the countries of the countries of the region.

The alliance «strengthens the coordination, the articulation of efforts and the generation of synergies between the Ministry of Health, international cooperation and national parties,» added the director of the PAHO.

«In addition, it will allow the alignment of investments and online actions with the priorities of primary health care of Chile, reinforcing the resolved capacity of the first level of care, management optimization and consolidating a territorial approach.»

«A healthy population improves economic performance, learning capacity and reduces the cost associated with the disease,» said Ximena Paz Aguilera Sanhueza, Minister of Health of Chile. «It is an honor to participate in the launch of this Advisory Board of the Alliance for Primary Health Care. I appreciate the commitment of each institution that accompanies us on this path that Chile has decided to undertake.»

«Primary medical care is essential for the World Bank Health Strategy,» added Juan Pablo Uribe, World Health Nutrition Director at the World Bank. «We reiterate our strong support for this alliance, which now includes Chile and is very in line with the support we are already providing to strengthen primary medical care in the country.»

«The incorporation of Chile in the alliance marks a significant step towards the construction of resistant and efficient health systems in Latin America. In the IDB, we continue to support this collaboration effort that aligns the technical and financial resources to expand access, heritage and quality in primary health care,» said Javier Guzmán, head of the Health Unit, Nutrition and Population Unit in the Inter -American Development Bank.

The Table Advisory is an innovative government mechanism at the national level to facilitate coordination between the Alliance and the Ministry of Health of Chile. It will promote the alignment of technical and financial resources towards the strategic objectives of the country, as well as guarantee coherence between current and future projects.

«The Table Advisory that we are launching today not only marks the beginning of a new stage for Chile, but also paves the way for innovative solutions with regional impact,» concluded the director.

The Alliance for Primary Health Care in the Americas

The Alliance for Primary Health Care in the Americas was launched in December 2023 by PAHO, the IDB and the World Bank, with the aim of strengthening investment, innovation and implementation of policies and initiatives to transform health systems in the region, with a strong emphasis on primary health care.

Since its launch, the Alliance is working with 10 countries in the region through a decentralized and participatory structure that promotes strategic and technical dialogue between the three organizations at the country level. Chile is the third country in the region with an agreement to operationalize the alliance. The Alliance supports the development of National PHC investment plans, provides guidance to countries to strengthen the resistance and capacity of their health systems, and cooperate to design and implement evidence -based interventions adapted to specific contexts and challenges.
