Washington, DC, April 14, 2025 (PAHO) – The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is launching the digital literacy program for health sector staff, a virtual initiative aimed at strengthening the digital skills of health workers in the Americas and supporting efforts to improve access and quality of the use of emerging technologies.
Digitization is transforming the way health information is managed and how care is provided. However, the gaps remain in the region regarding access to the use and understanding of digital health tools, such as electronic health records, telemedicine platforms, mobile applications for monitoring patients and epidemiological alert systems.
«This program aims to close these gaps by equipping health personnel with key knowledge to lead the change in their workplaces,» said Marcelo D’Agostino, head of the Digital Information and Health Systems Unit in Paho. «With renewed competencies for the digital world, the region will move towards more resistant and equitable health systems,» he added.
When completing the program, participants will have developed the ability to apply information technologies, administer data effectively and integrate digital solutions to improve access, quality and coordination of health services.
The curriculum covers essential issues such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence, data governance, telesalud, vital statistics, interoperability, Big Data analysis, infodemic management and digital diplomacy, among others.
Designed as a totally virtual experience, the program combines technical classes, policy dialogues with experts, key conferences and collaborative spaces. It also includes studies of real world cases of the region and a self -assessment tool to adapt learning to the needs of each participant.
The sessions, which are free and complemented by thematic courses, will offer simultaneous interpretation in Spanish and English and will be available through Paho’s Virtual Campus for Public Health.
This initiative responds to the call made by the Ministers of Health of the Americas during the 59th Paho Management Board in 2021, urging the organization to promote health systems that are accessible, connected and interoperable, ensuring that no one is left behind in the search for the highest possible level of health and well -being in the digital age.
PAHO/Who invites all health workers to register and participate in this initiative.
The official launch of the digital literacy program will take place on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 am (Eastern time). To register, click here: Web Seminars Registry – Zoom
