November 25th commemorates the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. This date was designated by the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) in 2000 to raise awareness about this problem. This year, the theme chosen by the UN is «A woman is murdered every 10 minutes. #NoExcusa. UNITE to end violence against women» and aims to mobilize the entire society in the face of the escalation of violence against women.
Despite the progress made in recent years, violence against women continues to be carried out in different ways: psychologically, physically, sexually, economically, digitally (acts of violence committed through the use of mobile phones, the Internet, social networks, etc.). etc.), or through feminicide, female genital mutilation, child marriage, or trafficking in women and girls -mainly for the purposes of sexual exploitation-.
Violence against women is defined by the UN as «any act of violence based on belonging to the female sex that results or may result in physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, as well as threats of such acts.» «. , coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether they occur in public or private life.
Today, violence against women and girls remains one of the most widespread and pervasive human rights violations around the world. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in 3 women suffer or have suffered physical and/or sexual violence at some point in their lives.
