Mental Health Catalonia and the University of Barcelona develop a study on aging and emotional well-being

Both institutions are carrying out a research project to improve support for people with mental disorders and their families over 55 years of age. Healthy ageing is one of the most important challenges in our current society.

The Federation of Mental Health of Catalonia and the University of Barcelona have launched a new research project focused on ageing and emotional well-being. The starting point of the research is a study designed to better understand the reality of ageing in people with mental disorders and their families. Its aim is to improve support, prioritising prevention, detection and intervention actions.

«Healthy ageing is one of the most important challenges in our current society, so we want to identify the psychosocial needs and strengths of people over 55 years of age who live with a mental disorder, as well as their relatives over 55 years of age, in order to promote actions that improve their emotional well-being,» explains the Catalan federation.

What is the methodology of the study?

The study consists of three main parts:

    • Bibliographic study: Search and analysis of scientific articles that have investigated the psychosocial needs of older people with mental disorders.
    • Quantitative study: Survey on psychological well-being needs and opportunities/strengths, aimed at people aged 55 years with mental disorders, as well as family members aged 55 years or older. This is the current phase of the research.
    • Qualitative study: Conducting two focus groups of 8 to 10 people to expand the information collected quantitatively and explore elements of the life cycle that may be obstacles or opportunities for satisfactory aging.

The project is supported by an Advisory Committee, made up of people with their own experience, family members and professionals, and an Advisory Board with institutional representatives from organisations and public administrations.
