Tomorrow, March 12, we will present during our XVII International Congress the new work published in the collection ‘Advances in food, nutrition and dietetics’. The edition is in charge of Dr. Andrea Calderón and is titled «Obesity, genetics and environment. The role of metabolic flexibility«.
From the prologue by Dr. Mª Dolores Marrodán we highlight: Fortunately, thanks to research, we are more aware that obesity is not a pathology that is due exclusively to the laziness or lack of will of the subject and that the messages of guilt or stigmatization towards patients, no. Not only do they not help stop being overweight, but they can seriously harm your mental health. We also know, and this is very important, that obesity is conditioned by economic and social conditions. All this knowledge that science has placed in our hands must serve to approach the study and treatment of this pathology with new perspectives that emphasize the prevention and reduction of the obesogenic environment without discriminating against people.
Precisely, with this approach, the book addresses various facets related to obesity, from its environmental and genetic conditions to the physical and mental complications that it entails. Its etiology and pathophysiology are explored, as well as the impact of the Western diet on metabolism, inflammation and chronic diseases. The importance of the Mediterranean diet in the prevention of obesity and its comorbidities, including depression, is highlighted. Likewise, metabolic flexibility, its relationship with nutrition and the risk of obesity, as well as the importance of physical exercise in body composition and health, are considered.
