When we think about education, we generally associate it with boys/girls, adolescents and young people. However, education must accompany us throughout our lives to acquire new abilities and skills that allow us to adapt to continuous changes social, cultural and technologies that surround us.
The adult education Its purpose is to offer people over eighteen years of age the possibility of acquiring, updating, completing or expanding their knowledge and skills for their personal and professional growthbut It not only focuses on the development of academic and work skills, it goes further, as it also helps us strengthen our social and emotional skills.
The objectives of adult education are the following:
- Acquire basic training, expand and renew knowledge, skills and abilities on a permanent basis and facilitate access to the different teachings of the educational system.
- Improve professional qualifications or acquire preparation to practice other professions.
- Develop personal capabilities in the areas of expressiveness, communication, interpersonal relationships and knowledge construction.
- Develop the capacity to participate in social, cultural, political and economic life and make effective the right to democratic citizenship.
- Develop programs that correct the risks of social exclusion, especially of the most disadvantaged sectors.
- Respond adequately to the challenges posed by the progressive aging of the population, ensuring older people the opportunity to increase and update their skills.
- Anticipate and peacefully resolve personal, family and social conflicts.
- Promote effective equality of rights and opportunities between men and women, as well as critically analyze and assess inequalities between them.
- Acquire, expand and renew the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for the creation of companies and for the performance of business activities and initiatives, the economy, care, social collaboration and citizen commitment.
- Develop attitudes and acquire knowledge linked to sustainable development and the effects of climate change and environmental, health or economic crises and promote health and healthy lifestyle habits.
Although the benefits of adult education are evident, we want to highlight the following:
- Increase confidence in our abilities and self-esteem, which contributes positively to our personal and professional lives.
- It encourages social participation by offering opportunities to participate in community activities, which promotes social inclusion and a sense of belonging.
- It promotes the development of emotional skills, time management, emotional intelligence, empathy and the ability to establish and maintain healthy interpersonal relationships.
