Every November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is commemorated.
Violence against women is that exerted on them for the simple fact of being a woman. It is one of the clearest manifestations of inequality, subordination and the power relations of men over women.
It presents multiple manifestations, such asviolencepsychological, physical, sexual, economic (tries to prevent women’s economic independence),online or digital violence (acts of violence committed through the use of mobile phones, the Internet, social networks, etc.),feminicide, female genital mutilation, child marriage, and trafficking of women and girls (mainly for sexual exploitation).
Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread and widespread human rights violations in the world. According to data from the WHO and the UN, it is estimated that, globally, 736 million women – almost one in three – have been victims of physical and/or sexual violence at some point in their lives. Most of the time the aggressor is the partner. Almost a third (27%) of women ages 15 to 49 have reported experiencing some type of physical and/or sexual violence by their partner. In Spain, so far this year, 53 women have died for this reason.
In many cases, this violence remains hidden due to fear, stigmatization or even the normalization of the violence itself, possessive and controlling attitudes such as jealousy, and blaming the situation.
We can all do something to empower those affected, as well as prevent and reduce gender violence.
